Face to Face: Special Effects Makeup Curriculum

 

Face to Face Beauty & Make-Up Design School was the first make-up and special effects school in Africa to gain national and international recognition. We’re passionate about all things make-up, and our specialised special effects courses are tailored towards make-up artists who want to broaden their horizons and delve into the world of make-up artistry, special effects, and prosthetics.

Special Effects – Subject Overview

 

Our diploma in design, make-up artistry, prosthetics, and special effects is a one-year, full-time course that runs from Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 1:00 pm. During this comprehensive course, students will cover a wide array of subjects related to special effects, including:

 

  • Basic cleansing and skin anatomy
  • Colour and lighting for theatre and photography
  • Theatrical ageing techniques
  • Drag make-up
  • Special effects (including wounds, bullet holes, and burns)
  • Make-up styles through history, including Ancient Egypt and Greece
  • Crepe beard application
  • Fantasy and futuristic make-up
  • Bald cap application

 

The special effects and prosthetics component particularly covers many exciting subjects, including:

 

  • Creation of life masks
  • Taking impressions and making moulds
  • Making dental impressions and teeth
  • Sculpting designs of various body parts, including hands and feet
  • Hot and cold foam techniques
  • Working with various materials, including fake blood and collodion
