4 Dynamic Skills You’ll Learn in Special Effects Make-Up Courses

Special effects make-up (commonly known as SFX in professional circles) is an exciting and dynamic career path, offering make-up artists boundless opportunities in theatre, commercials, and film. Attending a reputable make-up school and enrolling in special effects make-up courses is one of the best ways to develop the technical skills needed to land a special effects make-up career.

So, what exactly is special effects make-up? Special effects make-up artists use various processes such as prosthetic sculpting, casting, and moulding to create intricate cosmetic masterpieces. Special effects make-up artists transform actors and performers into an array of compelling characters, from goblins and ghouls to zombies and mystical creatures. They can also make actors look older, younger, thinner, or larger using their creative skills.

What You’ll Learn by Doing Special Effects Make-Up Courses

So, what exactly do you learn when you enrol in one of our special effects make-up courses? Here are four important subject areas you’ll cover during our one-year, highly practical, full-time make-up course:

  1. Making Bald Caps: Bald caps are super crucial in SFX. Made of glatzan or latex, they ensure that the actor’s hair is completely smooth so that the make-up artists can work on a slick surface or create a bald appearance. We’ll also teach students how to colour bald caps.
  2. The Art of Piece Moulding: Piece moulding is a unique component of the course, whereby students learn how to mould prosthetic pieces to dramatically transform the subject’s appearance. Students will learn how to mould noses, eye bags, chins, and more. Prosthetics are often made of rubber, silicone, or latex.
  3. Wounds and Injuries: Another important skill we teach students is that of creating injuries, wounds, scars, and skin imperfections. We’ll teach students how to use various products, including scar wax, to create realistic-looking injuries.
  4. Making Teeth and Dental Impressions: We’ll also instruct students on how to make dental impressions and create fake teeth. These are effective in transforming appearances dramatically, whether making the subject look older, creating the illusion of missing teeth, or turning them into an other-worldly character.

We also cover several other vital subjects, including hot and cold foam, make-up styles through the ages, and life mask creation.

All students will be provided with a make-up kit filled with top-quality products. At the end of the course, you will receive a Face to Face certificate of achievement.
