Reflexology Techniques

Follow your Dream In ReflexologyUnderstanding Reflexology Techniques

Reflexology is an ancient bodily practice that originated in ancient Egypt thousands of years ago. It strives to restore balance in the body and works with the central nervous system. It is based on the understanding that all bodily functions and organs can be stimulated via specialised points in the feet, hands, and outer ears and thus highlights connections within the body. In a reflexology session, the therapist will apply varying amounts of pressure to various parts of your hands, ears, and feet, utilising different techniques. Some top reflexology techniques include the following:

  1. Thumb walking: During this technique, the therapist uses their thumb to apply pressure to various parts of the body. They walk their thumb along the surface of the skin, pushing in and out and keeping the pressure slightly forward. Essentially, their thumb walks along the skin surface in a forward direction, picking up any tenderness that might need to be treated.

  1. Finger walking: This reflexology technique is great for the top or side of feet and more sensitive areas. It is much like thumb walking, but the index finger is used instead. It works very well between the metatarsal bones of the hands and feet.

  1. Hook and back up: This technique is all about stimulating a specific point on the body. The therapist uses their thumb to locate the point and presses deeply and then slowly moves it out. This is effective for the gall bladder and spleen. If areas are especially sensitive, clients should let their therapist know so that they can apply the appropriate pressure.
